The normal method is to fill these tanks with inert (non-explosive) gas from the ship's boiler flue: it is cleaned and then pumped into the empty tanks, or into the spaces left above the oil in loaded tanks. An inert gas system is required on all new tankers and most existing tankers of 20,000 dwt and above.

According to the United States Coast Guard, 35.7% of the volume of oil spilled in the United States from 1991 to 2004 came from tank vessels (ships/barges), 27.6% from facilities and other non-vessels, 19.9% from non-tank vessels, and 9.3% from pipelines; 7.4% from mystery spills.

The largest ship ever built was an oil tanker; the Knock Nevis built in 1979 (launched as the Seawise Giant) with 565,000 of dwt, a length 458 meters, a beam of 69 meters and a draught of 25 meters. As the name suggests, Aframax are medium-sized oil tankers with a dead weight tonnage (DWT) between 80,000 and 119,999. Though relatively small in size in comparison to VLCC and ULCC , Aframax tankers have a capacity to carry up to 120,000 metric tonnes of crude oil. Container vessels range in size from as small as those with capacity of about 500 TEU and as large as those with capacity of about 22,000 TEU. Containerships can load both 20-foot and 40-foot containers and therefore each vessel should explain its maximum capacity for each of the two types of container. Among oil tankers, supertankers are designed for transporting oil around the Horn of Africa from the Middle East. These tankers weigh from 70,000 to 120,000 dead weight tons, with a capacity of 750,000 barrels of oil. These tankers are the largest tankers in the Average Freight Rate Assessment (AFRA) tanker rate system.

They frequent places where there are limited port facilities or small ports to accommodate giant oil carriers. The maximum permissible limit of the beam of such a vessel is 32.3 meters or 106 ft. (iii) Aframax Tankers (80,000 - 119,999 TDW) These were originally configured to obtain the best rates under the oil companies old Average Freight Rate Assesement scale, which benefitted tankers just under 80,000 TDW. This resulted in a proliferation of ships of 79,999 TDW. Nowadays the term applies to tanker size of a wider range.
